Hackney 2s are getting quite familiar with heart breaking close losses, after going 13 points ahead with a conversion to come with 10 minutes remaining, a missed kick and Hertford somehow finding a way back into the match lead to the opposition number 9 coolly slotting the winning kick.

The Gargoyles started well despite losing influential forwards Ollie Hart and Adam Balzano to injury inside 10 minutes. This lead to a long range penalty and more pressure in the Stags 22 from where Alex Devereux scampered round the unguarded blind side to score the first of many tries. The Hack pack though were conceding closer to 2 stone per man to the opposition rather than their customary 1 stone, this showed at scrums and driving mauls which set up Hertford's first try after a quite ridiculous drop goal from the opposition fly half. The home side ended the first half on top though, good handling found Dan Bretton in a bit of space and he crashed over two would be tacklers to become the second debutant to score a try.

A lot more space was to found in both sides defence in the second half which became a high scoring affair. Man of the match Alex Devereux was the main beneficiary and he added one long range solo effort to two try assists for Ultan Murphy and Jimmy Huskins as the Hackney backs ran riot when given space and time. However Hertford were increasingly starting to dominate possession and territory. Incessant huge carries from the away sides hooker matched with a number of penalties conceded by the Hack led to the Stags methodically marching up the field time and time again to come back and snatch the match away in the final quarter.
