This Saturday Hackney travelled away to Old Ashmoleans for the last fixture before Christmas and a well deserved break. With Old Ashmoleans at the bottom of the league table Hackney knew they would be in for a good game and bonus point win would be essential to keep there promotion goal on target.

From the kick off Hackney took a dominant approach with a first ten minute phase of play which saw Hackney undo Old Ashmoleans, with excellent support play and rucking skills coming from the Hackney forwards to secure the ball and make good yards. It was not long after the first 10 minutes when Ben Chamberlain crossed the line to put Hackney ahead. With 20 minutes left on the clock for the first half Hackney continued to dominate with further tries coming from Alex O’Hara, Charlie Davies, Ben Chamberlain and debutant try scorer Charles Bailey.

Hackney continued to finish off the first half with excellent phases of play, seeing James Dawson and James Rowbottom make good yards through the Old Ashmolean centres. At this point Old Ashmoleans continued to suffer as they kept being penalised for off-side and hands in the ruck, all of which helped Hackney to finish off the first half Old Ashmoleans 0 – Hackney – 40.

After encouraging words from Hackneys Coach Ben Scalan for the half time talk, Hackney went back to the field, however before the ref blew the whistle to start he warned both side of ill discipline and said we should expect to be further penalised if it continued.

From the whistle it was Old Ashmoleans who were first to infringe; within the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half their open side flanker was sin binned for a high tackle. With Ashmoleans only having 14 on the pitch Hackney continued to dominate with further tries coming from Alex O’Hara, Ben Chamberlain and the try of the season coming from Jack with a 80 meter run stepping easily past every Ashmolean player to put the ball down right underneath the posts.

Hackney continued to play well, though with a dominant lead and 20 minutes left of the 2nd half ill discipline put both Hackney players Uzo and John Tully in the sin bin, leaving Hackney with 13 men. With this Old Ash seized the opportunity to batter the Hackney defence. With strong forward runners from the Ashmolean's front row hammering the Hackney defence to no avail, as the Hackney front row of Andy Pilkington, Charles Bailey, Alex Bobin along with Laurence Mills, Johnny Crockett and Ollie Hart driving the Old Ash runners back to where they started from. With the strong defence proving to be a brick wall and wearing down Ashmoleans, Hackney were given the chance to counter with Alex O’Hara picking up his hat-trick for the game. With the last ten minutes of the clock and Hackney back to 15 men, they continued to turn the screw on Ashmoleans with James Hardwick collecting a spilt ball from Ashmoleans to make a 60 meter dash across the line and end the game Old Ashmoleans 0 – Hackney 64.

An excellent game for Hackney which gives them a platform to go into Christmas knowing that the promotion race is still on.
