After last season's League & Cup double success, the Hackney 2nd XV were promoted 2 leagues from Merit League 7 to Merit League 5. This jump was always going to be a tester for the Gargoyles in only their 3rd full season of league rugby. And so it proved...

An influx of new players & a lack of time together as a team in the offseason showed; with Hackney disorganized for the 1st 18 mins Tring shipped 14 points.

The following 10 mins the tables were however turned ∓ Hackney had all the go forward but only 5 points to show for it. The remainder of the half was again Tring.s with a further 8 points to the good.

The second half started no better, a try to Tring virtually direct from the kick-off. This seemed to wake the sleeping Hackney .fire., the rest of the match played fairly evenly around the pitch. Some clever mid-field play from Tring stretched the Hackney defence fully, leaving a resolute Gargoyles defence unable to stop the scoring.

Playing without a recognized fly half did not help Hackney.s quest (Jonny Vivas twisted his ankle in warm up); newcomer Nuno Moura did however do a solid job covering. Experienced forwards Ben Scott-Robinson, Blair Gray & Pete Walsham covered alot of ground & worked their socks off in the tight. Dave Huxley had a very solid game at 8, with safe hands and strong running from the base of the scrum. Pete Kaoud also made a difference after he came on at 7 for the 2nd half.

MOTM: Guy Halfhead was a big presence in defence & made metres; sometimes when it appeared there was no space he created it for himself.

The Gargoyles' covering captain Andy Spinks was mugged on Saturday night after the game. As a result, he's decided to take some time off playing rugby. Tim Cox has agreed to step in until Darren Griffin returns from injury. Blair Gray will continue leading the forwards.
