Welwyn 4th XV 38 - 15 Hackney 3rd XV

Written by: Jon Wood

Maybe there's something about Garden cities that sap the mighty Gogs of their strength.

In the pack it was a question of scale, geometry, and grunt. They were larger, more rounded and certainly more physical. A few of the Hackney pack, the captain included found themselves rolling off tackles as the Welwyn forwards gathered momentum.

Until 20 minutes into the second half, after conceding three tries in quick succession, the visitors still felt they could win. The backs, to a man, were as effective as they have been all season, scoring three great tries but possession was rare. A tremendous effort by the forwards could not overcome the disadvantage of having three players out of position and the retirement through injury of Simon Ferguson, the Gogs fearless hooker, very early on.

It was hoped that the absence of some powerful key players up front would not affect a side full of ambition but unfortunately this was not the case. They were missed. Next week will be a different story as the Gogs are now even more determined to stay top of the league.

MOTM: Andy Owen. Played lock- put in some great tackles and caught every ball from the restart!

Special Mentions: Darren Griffin never ceases to amaze. He arrived (on a late request from the captain to sub as a back) just in time to see Simon carried off by the medics, five minutes later he is hooking for the first time without hesitation. Well done Emperor.

Simon Ferguson had an operation on his shoulder but is doing well. May be out for the rest of the season- The Gogs wish you a speedy recovery.

Owen Addison. He's back! After a long difficult illness Gigantor returns. He was due to play 15 but ended up doing the full 80. Showed his class on a few occasions. The Gogs will be taking advantage of his return until he's back to full fitness.
